Definition:

EHEC is a type of bacteria that produces Shiga toxin, a potent poison that can cause severe illness

Transmission: 

EHEC is typically spread through the consumption of contaminated food or water, such as: 

Undercooked ground beef, Raw milk, Unpasteurized juice, and Contaminated produce. 

Symptoms: 

Most people infected with EHEC develop mild symptoms, including: 

  • Abdominal pain
  • Diarrhea, which may become bloody
  • Nausea
  • VomitingÂ

In some cases, EHEC can cause more severe complications, such as: 

  • Hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS): A life-threatening condition that affects the kidneys, blood, and platelets
  • Neurological problemsÂ
